Running was originally helping with stress
But at some point running became a major contributor to stress. Instead of something fun to do, it got filled with pressure, mostly pressure to compete with myself. I started training really hard and fast, and subsequently started injuring myself while training.
Now I haven’t run a race since last fall, and I’ve decided I don’t have to run unless I want to. This means I’ve...

How 2 Run Fast: Would You Run a Marathon Indoors? →
idontgetrunnershigh:
how2runfast:
A recent article in the Wall Street Journal describes the growing popularity of marathons run on indoor tracks, requiring 150 laps or more to complete the 26.2 mile race.
My son runs indoor track, so I’ve been to a lot of indoor races recently. I get dizzy just watching them. I can’t…
I really considered doing the Instep Indoor Marathon in Milwaukee a few...
Second run is officially back
Once you’ve done your second run to “get back on track” you’re all right. Ran 33 minutes today, and didn’t get chased by any pit bulls. When I’m back in New York and it’s freezing, this will continue. I’ve had lost winters before, but not this time. (Mark it.)
Ran today
Haven’t been since hurting myself before the marathon, which is quite a while to take off. But, I’m busy at work, and after not getting to do the marathon the wind has been out of my sails.
I’m on vacation in Turks and Caicos, and I did a 30-minute run today in shorts and a tank top. It seemed all right, except that a pit bull came out of the tropical plants along the road and...

This year I will not be running the New York...
I injured myself just before leaving for a conference in Las Vegas. Nothing big, just did an hour long run, felt good and strong, and then had trouble walking afterward. Didn’t run for a week, while away, but then ran again tonight to test the water. The area behind my knee hurts, and it’s hard to walk at a normal pace with a normal gait.
This is the kind of injury that happens...
Good luck Chicago Marathoners!

Longest run of the year
Went 23 miles today. Ran to Central Park, then went 3 laps of the park. On the last lap, I cut out the great hill. That’s my longest of the year. From now till the race, all runs will be less. I’m tired!

BLISTERS!
Today I ran 3:05 in new shoes. Brand new, shining white Asics GT-2150’s. Every time they cancel one model and bring out a new one (2140 = over; 2150 = your new and only option) it makes me nervous, and I’m afraid I’ll wind up crippled. I have blisters and a bloody toe to report, but no lifelong debilitating crippling. Unless it’s slow onset.
I went a way I don’t...

I killed it! My goal was to take 20 minutes off my last race… I wound up knocking 40 minutes off!! My time at the Westchester Triathlon this morning was 3 hours, 7 minutes!! I’m so happy.
CONGRATS MARC!! You’re knocking 40 minutes off your triathlon time! I can’t swim!! :)

Marathon Tune-Up
Did the Marathon Tune-Up yesterday. Last year, this was a rainy and cold race, but yesterday was warm and sunny. The race is 3 laps of Central Park, which is 6 miles around, making 18 miles. The race is about 7 weeks before the NYC Marathon, so you can use it to judge how you’re doing. My training has been decent this year, so I formulated a running plan and had a goal and all that....

I finally finished… 11.5 hours later… I meant to complete the 100 mile century in 6 hours.. though, I didn’t anticipate several flat tires, a broken spoke, a crash, aiding a woman with deep lacerations due to another crash, cold rain, detours, but…. I fucking did it! I’m so happy!
I saw the riders along my entire run this morning: from Astoria to South Williamsburg. Didn’t...

I Hate Mile 23: 18 miler →
awpoops:
I think I’ll be doing my first 18-er this weekend. I’ve done a lot of runs in the 15-17 range, and averaged about 40 miles a week for the last month. I’m not really following a training plan. I’m just doing this willy-nilly. The heat this summer has been really shitty, but for the most part I’ve just been running what I feel like running, and reminding myself that this is a hobby and...

18 miler
I did my first 18 mile run of the year yesterday. It’s 6 miles from home to Central Park, and then the loop of the park is also 6 miles. So for an 18 mile run I get up early, go across the 59th Street Bridge to Manhattan, and then do two laps of Central Park. The park is one of my favorite places to run, as long as you get there early before too many people arrive.
The run went fine. My...

Running is hard these days
Yesterday I ran, possibly for the 5th time in 3 weeks. It’s been so hot for so long, that most days I go home intending to run, but then fall asleep instead. Normally I have trouble running through the winter, but this year it’s the summer giving me trouble. (It all started with that terrible race on Wall Street.)
How do you do it?

I’m not a fitness blog… I don’t think, and I don’t want to be healthier. I just want to be faster.
I Hate Mile 23 seconds that emotion. I run to stop the voices in my head.

What Not to Do as a Spectator →

With my first race of the season today, I thought this would be appropriate.
Add to number one don’t say “you cam do it!” I know they mean well, but it makes me mad. I feel like that means I look worse than I feel.
I sometimes yell “You can DO it!” but it’s all in how you say it. More universally excellent things to yell are You got it!,...

American Heart Association Start! Wall Street Run...
This race on Thursday afternoon wound through lower Manhattan to finish on the Battery Park promenade. The official race temp is 87 degrees, but I don’t know if I believe that. Sounds too cold and balmy to me. When your pace steadily drops off through the whole race, you are runnin’ too fast, boyo. God, it was hot.
There weren’t so much spectators as tourists who were mad they...
This is gonna be the worst race evar
Temperature on Thursday: 96!
Okay, we’re really giving up on the race.

Hot Hot Heat
I’m doing a race Thursday afternoon. It’s a 3 mile, and I was hoping to do a good pace time with it. It’s been really hot, though, and every time I run I feel like I just woke up from a 1000 year nap. Always a slog.
If this week and last were rainy and cool, then maybe I would feel good about it. But I think I’m going to let this one go and just run it. I will feel better...

NYRR Father's Day Race
If you ran this, I was the volunteer marshal at the thin part of the road near Central Park South. I yelled, “Here it gets tight, stay to the right!” About three bike riders called me an asshole. We don’t like them anyway, do we?
That's right, it's 90 and I'm going running

Runners spit towards their feet!
Just a friendly reminder everyone might pass on to two other people, like a very, very helpful chain letter. Remember that we all spit down, towards our feet, rather than, say, over our shoulder at head level, or at the grass eight feet away.
Because!: you never know who might be passing you right at that moment!
(Yes, twice in the past two weeks.)

Snakes on a Run
Yesterday I was running on County Line Road and got scared by a snake on the road. He was dead though. Then today I got scared by the same snake a second time. Still dead.

running on empty: Do as I say… →
I’m writing a few articles for Runner’s World. One of them is about how runners can get addicted (so to speak) to using gadgets like iPods and HRMs and how sometimes it’s important to go sans technology. For instance, all coaches say you really shouldn’t listen to music when coming off an…
